Ecuador Invests More Than USD 3M in Irrigation Across 525 Hectares
Ecuador has invested more than USD 3 million in seven technified parcel-irrigation projects, with direct benefits for 517 agricultural producers and indirect benefits for more than 2,000 people tied to farming activity.
The projects are part of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries irrigation program.
Project Scope
| Indicator | Figure |
|---|---|
| Investment | More than USD 3M |
| Projects | 7 |
| Direct producers | 517 |
| Indirect beneficiaries | More than 2,000 |
| Irrigated area | 525 hectares |
| Current small/medium producer irrigation coverage | ~18% |
The systems are located in Tintales, El Cardón, Puerto La Boca, Cumbijín, El Verdún, Pijumbí and Potrerillos.
The government says the objective is to increase agricultural productivity through efficient water access and technical capacity for small and medium farmers.
Sector Impact
Irrigation access affects more than crop yield. It changes financing risk, because producers with reliable water are less exposed to drought and rainfall volatility. The source notes that financial institutions can perceive lower risk when farmers have irrigation systems, which can support investment in infrastructure, technology and crop expansion.
In Manabí, where agriculture has historically depended on rain cycles, the source frames irrigation technology as a potential continuity tool for harvests.
Access Conditions
Interested producers must belong to legally constituted organizations, hold valid authorization for water use and meet legal land requirements when community irrigation infrastructure is involved.
What to watch
-
Whether irrigation coverage for small and medium producers rises from the current ~18% baseline
-
Credit access and default behavior for producers receiving irrigation systems
-
Expansion into rain-dependent provinces such as Manabí
-
Additional MAGP budget allocations for parcel-level irrigation
