Diesel Benchmark Reaches USD 4.19 Before Ecuador's August Reset

Benchmark movement

The U.S. Gulf Coast price for low-sulfur diesel rose from USD 3.26 per gallon on July 3 to USD 4.19 on July 24. The marker is the closest international reference used for diesel pricing in Ecuador.

Regular gasoline increased from USD 3.78 to USD 4.10 per gallon over the same period, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The rebound reduces the probability that Ecuador will repeat the exceptional formula adjustment that lowered Extra, Ecopais, and automotive diesel by USD 0.05 per gallon in July. Final August retail prices had not been announced at the source date.

Pricing framework

Ecuador resets regulated prices for Extra, Ecopais, and diesel on the 12th day of each month.

The gasoline band, in place since June 2024, allows monthly increases of up to 5% and reductions of up to 10% based on international-market movement. Diesel entered the mechanism in December 2025.

President Daniel Noboa modified the calculation formula in July 2026, producing a reduction after five consecutive monthly increases. The latest benchmark movement tests how much room remains for discretionary relief within the band.

Business signal

The August reset will affect road-freight economics, distribution margins, agricultural transport, and consumer-facing delivery costs. The immediate issue is direction rather than a confirmed retail number: both relevant international markers moved higher during July.

Operators should separate the published benchmark movement from the official Ecuador price. Freight, domestic commercialization, and taxes are added before the retail value is set.

What to watch

  • The official August 12 price resolution
  • Whether the July exceptional formula is repeated or withdrawn
  • Diesel pass-through into freight and agricultural logistics
  • September benchmark movement after the July rebound
