Ecuador Confirms Second Fusarium Foc R4T Case In El Oro
Ecuador confirmed a second positive case of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Tropical Race 4 (Foc R4T), intensifying the phytosanitary watch around the country's banana sector.
Agrocalidad confirmed the case on July 14 after drone-supported monitoring detected a suspicious plant. The finding was located on a property in El Quemado, El Oro, adjacent to La Carolina, the farm where authorities registered Ecuador's first outbreak.
Response Measures
Official laboratories confirmed the positive diagnosis after samples were collected. Agrocalidad then activated the national contingency plan, with measures focused on containment, precise delimitation of the affected area, and prevention of spread to other musaceae crops in the region.
Current technical actions include isolation of the property, reinforced biosecurity protocols, new sampling, and constant monitoring of the zone. Agrocalidad is also carrying out training, technical assistance, and direct support for agricultural producers.
Business Relevance
The source report identifies national banana production as a key pillar of Ecuador's economy. That makes the second confirmed case relevant beyond one farm: the issue is whether containment protocols remain localized and effective.
What To Watch
Watch for additional confirmed cases in El Oro, changes in movement controls around affected properties, and any buyer or certification response tied to phytosanitary risk. The market signal is not the existence of a second case alone, but whether containment prevents a wider production-zone problem.
