Ecuador's private banking system reported USD 544.1 million in profit for the first half of 2026, the highest first-half figure recorded in the last decade.

The result was up 30.39% from USD 417.3 million in the same period of 2025, an absolute increase of USD 126.8 million.

Concentration Remains High

The four largest banks, Pichincha, Pacífico, Guayaquil, and Produbanco, concentrated 72% of sector profits, or USD 389.8 million combined.

The sector's first-half profit base has expanded by about 455% over ten years, moving from USD 97.9 million in 2016 to USD 544.1 million in 2026.

Credit Quality And Liquidity Signals

Reported delinquency improved from 3.24% in the first half of 2025 to 3.05% in June 2026. Liquidity moved in the other direction, falling 2.2 percentage points from June 2025 to June 2026.

The profit result therefore gives two signals at once: earnings remain strong, but the second-half operating environment still depends on credit demand, liquidity management, climate risk, energy conditions, and broader economic performance.

What To Watch

Watch whether the large-bank profit concentration holds through year-end, whether delinquency remains below 2025 levels, and whether liquidity continues to compress. For investors and corporate borrowers, the key issue is whether profitability translates into more competitive credit supply or simply stronger margins for incumbents.
